Established in 2003, the Berkeley Public Health Biorepository collects, stores, and tracks high quality biospecimens collected by long term studies of human health and disease in children and adults. BPH Biorepository (Holland –Director) is a critical resource supporting environmental and public health research.
Our state of the art facility is located at the Richmond Field Station in Richmond, CA adjacent to Dr. Holland’s Children’s Environmental Health Laboratory. We house over 500,000 human and environmental samples from over 40 ongoing research projects to support collaborators from UCSF, UC Berkeley, Stanford and the Public Health Institute. Biospecimens being stored and maintained at the Biorepository are from well characterized participants of longitudinal studies and birth cohorts, including children, pregnant women, and other underrepresented populations who are often the most vulnerable to environmental exposures.
The BPH Biorepository is an important and valuable resource to University of California and beyond, to generate and support new grant and student projects that can rely on banked and newly collected human specimens. This will help to push public health research forward by accessing already existing samples from children and other underrepresented populations with a range of different environmental exposures throughout the globe.
